Can I possibly have an ovarian cyst?
Hello. Well I have some symptoms that are related to ovarian cyst symptoms. I feel pinching sensations on my pelvic(where my ovaries are located) but its not painfull. Just a lil tiny bit. The skin in my ovary area kinda gets puffy when i sit down or lay down. Also the skin in my ovary area throbs slowly whenever i move my legs. I only felt nauseous once and vomited once (but i think i vomited because i didnt eat for a whole day) but i dont know. Sometimes i feel pinching sensations on my thighs. I have NOT gotten a fever. My lower back rarely hurts a small bit. On march 2010, i did an ultrasound and the docters said i was healthy. but that was already 5 months ago. I went to the docter last week and told her i still have the same symptoms and she said that there is nothing to worry about. She told me to come back when my symptoms get worse. I wanted to get another ultrasound test but i didnt ask the docter for one. So now im worried. Do you think i might possibly have ovarian cyst? thanks for your help. Oh, im 17 years old.

Well, you mention symptoms that certainly could be an ovarian cyst. Probably symptoms would be on one side though. Unless you have polycystic ovarian disease where your ovaries develop many cysts rather than developing an egg you develop a cyst. Caused by hormonal irregularities. Commonly misdiagnosed. Could be a number of things, really. Why did you have an ultra sound? Was it a pelvic ultra sound? a vaginal ultra sound? Really good to visualize the ovaries better. An abdominal/pelvic ultrasound? If you have had same symptoms for 5 months I would get a second opinion. Are you having normal periods? Are you skipping periods or having very irregular periods? Do the symptoms come and go like hormonal related to period times? Are you having a lot of clear mucus like discharge from the vagina,,maybe be high estrogen levels. So many questions your doctor should ask you to get a good history. Still could be different things. Like are your bowel movements normal? constipated? bouts of diarrhea? Eat fruit to make sure you are getting your bowel cleared out then if you still have that little bulge over your ovary I would go to a different doctor to get it checked out. You might ask to go to a gynecologist (female doctor ) or a gyno/ endocrinologist who specializes in female hormonal dysfunction. Don’t be shy about asking about a specific subject like a ovarian cyst or poly cystic ovaries if you have problems with both sides and usually have a lot of problems with periods like irregular and sometimes very uncomfortable crampy symptoms. Irritable bowel can also cause some of these symptoms. You would likely have changes in bowel habits like frequent bouts of diarrhea and constipation maybe with blood or mucus in the bowel movement. May have more left sided discomfort because that is where your colon would collect more fecal material. On the other hand attacks of appendicitis would likely be right sided and higher up in the abdomen. With the bowel or appendix you blood white count would be increased indicating inflamation in the bowel. A simple CBC or complete blood count would rule this out.
Get a second opinion, in all honesty they might not find something the first time on the ultra sound. If you doc isn’t addressing your concerns then you really need to find someone who will. It would also be good to have some support get your mom involved if she will or if you can. IF she won’t help then find a friend who can do it, maybe explain to them what is going on and see if they can attend an appt with you. Keep pushing till someone finds out what is wrong, even if it isn’t ovarian cyst then you need to find out what it IS!
Usually you don’t have any symptoms from ovarian cysts unless they are very large. If you had large cysts now they would most likely have been spotted in March. I don’t really think you have anything to worry about. Your symptoms does not sound like symptoms from having cysts. Most likely the pain sensations you have is due to normal things that goes on during your cycle, like ovulation, etc. You may be feeling for things a little too much as well.
If you are very worried about having or getting ovarian cysts you may want to start taking birth control pills. BC pills usually dissolves and prevents cysts.
Also keep in mind that most ovarian cysts are normal and not harmful at all.
I think it’s possible that you are feeling ovulation pains, but cysts also can grow during ovulation. I get that too.
I’ve been hospitalized twice for ovarian cysts that ruptured. The pain felt a little different that what you are describing. It felt almost like a knife stabbing into my side. It was so painful I could barely stand. I felt extremely nauseated. There was also a dull pain in my stomach as well as very painful pinching sensations in my side. The first time it happened, the doctor was thinking I had appendicitis or a bad gall bladder. They gave me morphine and did and ultra sound but couldn’t see anything. The second time it happened I went again. This time they suspected cysts and did a vaginal ultrasound. They found a cyst that had ruptured. It has happened since but I don’t bother even going to the hospital now because they can’t do anything for me anyway. The doctor has felt cysts before during vaginal exams.
Yes, it’s possible you have ovarian cysts. If it ruptures, you’ll feel the pain in a much more intense way.
I wish you luck and that you can feel better soon. This is a very hard thing to deal with.
