Can ovarian cysts cause a blood clot?

I had a good size cyst on my ovary about a month ago, and just Friday was discovered to have a DVT in my left leg. Trying to find an answer. II am part of a huge family and the only one with this problem, tho my daughter survived an embolism going through her heart two weeks after giving birth.

I’ve never heard of a connection there. I don’t see how either. In fact I have ovarian cysts and my doctor has me on birth control to help control it. I’d have to imagine that if the risk for a blood clot was there with a cyst, they wouldn’t try to treat it with hormonal birth control that carries its own risk for clots. But the best person to ask is your doctor.
Edit: Oh ok listen to the doctor down there.
I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, I have never had this happen nor have I ever heard of it. I did find this…I hope it helps you.

Im 13 and have an ovarian Cyst now… They really HURT! and yes… it can cause a blood clot. I got two when i had it the first time. In my left leg and hip. My doctor told me it was normal but to treat it immediatly. (the blood clot) I am not to sure why it causes blood clots but i know that it has something to do with your period…. Hope i helped
Yes.
Let me explain.
The cysts that are obviously found on the ovary are commonly filled with liquid or solid substances,.. sometimes both. These cysts have capillary buildup in them and bleed alot when they rupture or are agitated. For this reason, if one ruptures the internal fluid seeps out,.. which can *possibly* cause any clots in the cyst itself to get into the bloodstream and hence cause problems.
It isn’t a huge concern as alot has to go wrong for it to be incredibly dangerous, but the generally possibility is enough to warrant treatment.
This is nothing for emergency.
Unless you are experiencing excrutiating pain, or bleeding.
Endometriosis and cysts go hand in hand, as I’m sure you know. —
You can have a simple ultrasound run on the cyst(s) to see the type of material contained inside. Usually an ultrasound can determine the danger potential of such cysts.
Cysts don’t form overnight, so if they aren’t causing any immediate trouble, there is no need to rush for treatment. Though, having them removed sooner than later is advisable.
Again, it is possible, but it is very unlikely a clot from a cyst would come out, get into the proper channel in the bloodstream, and kill you. The odds are very low this type of thing would happen. The longer the cyst remains the higher the odds go, so it is advisable, again, to have it/them removed.
Hope that helps,
