PCOS causes infertility – but that is PCOS not all types of cysts. The cysts in PCOS rarely cause symptoms and are very very small. Large ovarian cysts are generally functional if you are young. They are divided into two categories. Follicular and Corpus Luteum. Follicular occurs in the follicular phase (obviously) when the egg is growing inside the dominant follicle. However, it fails to be released and the cyst keeps growing. Obviously if it is not released it cannot be fertilized. The other is a Corpus Luteum cyst. This is caused after ovulation when the egg breaks out of the small cyst – the cyst for some reason or another sometimes seals off and accumulates fluid (often blood). These can become quite large and sometimes need to be surgically removed. However, Corpus Luteum cysts will allow the egg to be released and it can be fertilized. Follicular cysts are much more common and tend to go away on their own.
I had to have a grapefruit sized Coprus Luteum cyst removed once by laparoscopy. It was pretty painless. I tend to get these cysts every now and then. I had a ruptured one last cycle that caused some pain – and caused my period to be late making me think I was pregnant!! But I wasn’t. Corpus luteum cysts will keep making progesterone keeping your period away and keeping your temps high. They are a cause of heartbreak sometimes

There are different types of ovarian cysts – some are completely harmless and go away on their own within a couple of cycles and others like pcos and endometriosis can be more painful and cause fertility issues. Depending on the type of cyst, there are treatments available and many women go on to successfully conceive a child.
If you suspect that you are experiencing ovarian cysts, you need to see your doctor and get tested to identify the type of cyst and to develop a treatment plan.
