Complex ovarian cyst?
I recently went to the doctor as I had this sharp sting pain in my left side and feeling like I have a full bladder all the time. My doctor sent me for an ultrasound which revealed a 4.5cm complex haemorrhagic ovarian cyst on my left ovary. I have to go for another ultrasound in 6 weeks to see whether the cyst has gone away or not. In the meantime my doctor has prescribed some pain killers for me and has put me on the birth control pill to see whether the cyst would go away. I didn’t really want to go on the pill as a few years ago when I took it I became very emotional, moody, had lots of headaches and had no sex drive. I discussed this with my doctor and he advised that the birth control pill I used back then was a very strong pill and that the pill he prescribed to me now is not as strong. I have found out that taking birth control pills doesn’t guarantee that cysts would never return again, but are there any other ways or options to consider instead of having to take the pill?

If you have a small functional ovarian cyst that is not causing any problems, your doctor may recommend a “watch and wait” approach. That is, you may need to return for a followup examination or ultrasound after one or two menstrual cycles, when there is a good chance that the cyst will have dissolved. Your doctor may suggest you avoid intercourse during this time, since it can cause a cyst to rupture. If the cyst grows, especially if it becomes larger than about 2 inches, it may need to be removed surgically. It may take a few months of using birth control pills before your cysts clear up. Your doctor can determine if the pills have been successful by repeating the pelvic exam, the ultrasound, or both. Your cysts may or may not return once you stop taking birth control pills. You can decide with your doctor how long you wish to stay on the pills.
The other option is to wait & see & do sugery if the cyst is getting larger. Surgery nowadays is easy & can be done through small opening in your umbilicus( the belly button). So there is no need to panic, just cool down, keep your medical appointments and remember that it is a minor problem, which can be sorted out very easily.
The other option you can take is to have it removed. I don’t know if that’s what you want. BUT, even if you had it removed, there is a chance the cyst might come back. Unfortunately, I had two cyst on both my overies and yes, I ended up on bc. It did take it away. I would listen to your doctor and try a smaller dose of bc. You have nothing else to lose and more to gain.

i think iam not alone , and you are not alone exactly your signs and symptoms i have them , and i went to a doctor to for medical advice and i was told to go for ultra sound which showed that i had masses , i have had this problem for 4 years and i get strong pains in my left ovary and at times painful periods and also during ovulation and i have wondered how to prevent them since they go and come back so many people have advised me to take the pill but i fear the risks related to the pill , im also wondering whether there is any other cure , im only 24 years and im worried not to be able to get pregnant
unfortunately, this is the least invasive way of removing the cyst. i had one at i think 16 and the pill didnt make it go away and then i had to have surgery.
basically cysts are very common and they normally work themselves out of you, however, in some cases like mine, they didnt and i had to have surgery. i would try a low dose birth control pill and see how you feel. if the side effects are bad, the talk to your doctor.
the birth control pill helps to prevent cysts as cysts are formed when you ovulate. if you do nto ovulate, then you dont get a cyst. if you skip or stop taking the pills, then you start ovulating again and risk getting another cyst.
