Complex Ovarian Cysts…what to do?
Recently, I ended up in the emergency room due to sudden abdominal pain. A CT scan and an ultrasound (both outside and inside) revealed that I had two cysts the the size of golf balls on my ovaries. The right one ruptured and sent me to the ER, but the left one is still intact. Upon going to my local ob-gyn, she refused to authorize surgery. The cysts were shown to be complex–both fluid and blood filled. I experience pressure constantly and pain almost daily. The doctor prescribed me some vicodin but I try not to take it since I cannot drive or really function on such narcotics. The local ob-gyn has basically told me to wait 6 weeks and then go back for another ultrasound to check on the cysts.
However, I can’t help but feel worried about the left cyst rupturing, and I don’t think it’s practical to limit my exercise and mobility to prevent rupture. I also don’t feel like the "wait and see" approach is healthy. Am I being unreasonable or should I get a second opinion?

Go get a second opinion! My mom had one like yours (same size and everything) and her insane doctor told her she was fine. She can no longer get pregnant because when it ruptured it damaged her ovary, plus the other one was already damaged.
With something as complex as you are describing it is always wise to seek a second opinion. There have been many cases where a second opinion was saught and great results came from the second opinion.
yes do the wait and see! even if you don’t want to wait that long at least give it 3 weeks. but a second opnion is a great idea!
as for the vicoden try taking half of the prescribed amount but do remember to drink lots of fluid because they will cause constipation:)
You could have three things
1. Endometrosis
2. Poly cystic ovary
3. Just plain cysts in the ovary which are developed due to hormonal imbalances and anovulatory cycles.
Please get a second opinion and try to rule out 1 and 2, cos they are serious. If u have 3 however it is very easy to treat. I had no 3 and i got both my cysts (just like yours) incised with a thick needle. Both had some clear fluids and no blood.
Please ask your doc to give you a complete hormone profile of your system and go to an endocrinologist with that report.
Ok dont freak out its all treatable and not serious. But yea i agree it can get very uncomfortable and painful. I used to beg for death during my periods!
I don’t think you’re being unreasonable at all if the cyst and medication for it are seriously affecting your functioning.
I’m not sure about complex ovarian cysts, but I do know that basic ovarian cysts can totally disappear on their own and cause no further problems given time. Alternatively they can rupture and send you packing for the ER. Been there, done that, scary and painful as all hell.
BC you’re not comfortable with this doctor’s choices for your care and because of the impact the remaining cyst is having on your functioning vis a vis the medication use (and not just your feellings of anxiety), definitely get another opinion on how to proceed. Makes all the sense in the world to me. I do know that doctors can and will operate on a cyst to avoid its causing more serious gynecological trouble than just the abdominal pain.
But, do be prepared if the new doctor agrees with the old and also remember that if you’re part of an HMO, they may be trying to keep down costs by denying you surgery. So, you’ll have to figurre out from there where that leaves you and what you want to do about it (appeal to upper management of the HMO?)

get a second oppinion. I personnaly had cyst like that constantly. and they would always rupture I only had to have one removed cause it wouldnt rupture it just got bigger.
Second Opinion and maybe a new Gyno. You go by what you feel.. sometimes Docs don’t do what you want and you have to push it. It is your health and safety take charge!
