I had a CT scan today that showed an ovarian cyst with free fluid in my pelvic region?

My question is this: Should I be concerned by these findings? I have constant pelvic pain that has had me in the hospital twice. The ER doctor today told me birth control would be my treatment. I wouldn’t think this would do anything for the fact that I have free fluid and a hemmoraging cyst. I’m just confused and would like to hear others’ opinions. Thanks.

Ovarian cysts of any kind can rupture or leak free fluid into the rectovaginal septum (aka Pouch of Douglas aka cul de sac). In patients with pelvic inflammatory disease, tubo-ovarian abcess, ruptured ectopic pregnancy and other certain conditions, free fluid is also often found. In your case, it sounds as though a cyst may have ruptured and you’ve got another one present. Ruptures are common with certain types of cysts, particularly "chocolate cysts" (endometriomas) and could definitely land you in the hospital with pain. Your findings, along with history and current symptoms, make Endometriosis a likely diagnosis. Oral contraceptives may quell some of the symptoms, but you deserve to have an actual diagnosis, which can only be obtained surgically. The good news is, the endometrioma(s) as well as the disease present throughout the pelvis can be removed during the same surgery.
