Is there a treatment for Ovarian Cysts?
I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cysts 9 years ago. I suffered them weekly until the Dr put me on birth control. According to her, it’s the only known prevention. However, for the past 3 years I have had monthly cysts around the middle of the month. I wake up feeling nauseous, and have pain throughout my abdomen and stomach. It slowly gains intensity through the day, and if I’m lucky it passes by 2pm with a final stab of pain over my right ovary (it’s always on the right).
I’m growing very tired of this. I can still eat during the day, as I never actually get "sick". I have tried, Pepto, Mylanta, Gas-X, 7-Up, Acid Reducers, and any other OTC to help this. Does anyone else suffer this, and how do they deal with it?
**Sidenote** I’m not pregnant. And once I have kids I plan on having my ovaries removed to avoid this monthly suffering.

I know how you feel as I have suffered from bilateral ovarian cysts for the past 11 years and very recently was diagnosed with 2 ovarian cysts (1 on each of my ovaries), but was told that 1 of the cysts have resolved, but that the other one is still there.
My doctor told me that having ovarian cysts is basically due to a hormonal imbalance. He explained to me that although the body is producing enough of the hormone oestrogen (which aids the body in the growth of the ovum) a second hormone called progesterone is not being produced enough to complete the release of the egg, or the ability for the egg to become fertilised once released.
If the ovum does not release during a normal cycle, and stays inside the ovary (although it doesn’t necessarily need to stay in the ovary, it can also remain in the fallopian tube), complications are likely to occur. These cysts can potentially grow inside the ovary (or just outside it). If this cyst enlarges it may become a problem.
According to my doctor the cysts can be dissolved by various hormonal treatments. However, if you are predisposed (inclined to suffer from ovarian cysts, which is sounds like you are, and just like me), the contraceptive pill may improve the chances of an ovarian cyst not to advance and therefore it will not form, however it can reform as has happened in my case even while I was on the pill.
If cysts don’t resolve and cause pain, it will require laparoscopic surgery under general anaesthetic, to view and if needed, the cyst/s will be removed by draining it through a small tube, which is also inserted into the abdomen. The type of surgery you need will depend on your age, and whether you are planning to have children. As sometimes the ovary affected will need to be removed. But don’t panic, you still have another ovary.
I have had surgery 2 times to have my ovarian cysts drained/removed once because of a big 7.7cm x 8.1cm fluid cyst and the other time because of a 2.2cm endometrioma cyst.
Try asking your doctor for a prescription for Ponstan (as it’s called her in Australia) or Ponstel (what it’s called in the US). I have been taking it 3 times a day and it has really helped with my severe period pain and made it a bit less painful and has also helped to ease my ovarian cyst pain.
I hope this helps you somewhat. Good luck
only surgical treatment…
i know exactly what you are going thru. i have the same problem. you may want to try different birth controls due to different hormone levels that can help or hinder your cysts. I use depo prevera and it works awesome. its a shot once every 3 months and it seems to help a lot more with deturing the cysts, but they still occur from time to time, but not as often. Unfortunately there is not a treatment that will work that is over the counter, but i found the fetal position, and a heating pad help deture the pain along with tylenol to help with fever and such. The only real treatment to stop is to totally remove your ovaries. Have you been checked for fibroid tumors or endometriosis? If not PLEASE do. it is common in women and is sometimes mistaken for cysts. When you have a cyst burst document it along with how bad the pain is and how long it lasts. this will better help you in the long run. Also drink plenty of fluids in order to remain hydrated and to flush the toxins out of your body from the cyst liquid. Hope this works for you and you don’t have them any more or as much. P.S. antacids will not help you one bit so forget about taking them.
Birth control pills are really only a short term solution to ovarian cysts. Often they will get rid of the cyst or at least reduce it, but only temporarily – it will come back.
Conventional medical approaches to ovarian cysts are very limited, and treat the symptoms rather than the underlying root cause. Have you considered the natural approach? Your doctor might not rate it, but that doesn’t mean it’s no good – thousands of women have had real success with this approach. If you take a holistic approach to treating what really is a profound internal, metabolic and hormonal problem, you are much more likely to get results.
