I woke up last night with extreme side pain and went to the doctor this morning to find out that I have an ovarian cyst. Why did it just start hurting? Is it getting ready to burst? What can I do about the pain?

I’m not sure why they start hurting, but I have some of them too. I ended up going to the emergency room because the pain was so bad. They did an internal sonogram on me to see them better, and they said that mine were very small, so there wasn’t much they could do with them. They told me that they don’t usually burst until they’re bigger. But with regular doctors visits that can tell how big they’re getting. My doctor also put me on birth control which is supposed to help with that. Also when I went to the emergency room, they gave me a prescription for Vicodin, which I didn’t take…I just took regular ibuprofen or aspirin. Also try a heating pad or a hot bath. That helped me.
Ovarian cysts can cause pain if they bleed, rupture or twist. If the cyst is large enough it can be removed. Small cysts will usually resolve on their own.
