Ovarian cyst/cancer?.. age 19..pregnant..opinions?
One year ago (February 07), I started to develop the following symptoms:
-Abdominal pain
-Shooting pains in pelvis/legs
-Bloated
-Weight Loss (about 5-10 pounds)
-fatigue
-changes in bowel movements (urgency)
-back pain
-cold sensations in feet
-burning while urinating (no infection)
-pain after intercourse when I started being sexually active in May
Anyway, my doc did an ultrasound in April/07 and found a cyst on both ovaries, the one on my left being complex, although quite small.. 3 cm in diameter I believe. My gyn thought it nothing to worry since I am "only 19" and brought up endometriosis. Put me on orthotrycyclen-lo and let me go. I was planning on having an ultrasound in Nov/Dec but unexpectedly got pregnant after going off ortho because of depression. Now.. I’m confused. What do I say to my doctor? She still thinks it was nothing to worry about and now I’m preg? Can people even get preg if they have ovarian cancer? Thank you for any advice/experience.
I still had the abdominal pain, pain after intercourse, burning while urination, and fatigue, and change in bowel movements during the pill. I no longer had the shooting pains, back pain, or cold sensations in the feet on the pill..I don’t know what this all means.

Ovarian cysts are not the same as cancer. They are very very common and usually (especially for a 19 year old) are not treated, just watched. They don’t usually affect whether or not you can get pregnant (and obviously this one didn’t). You should just follow your doctors advice, or if you are still unsure, get a second opinion.
It is always possible to get cancer even if pregnant. I had been having dysplasia on and off since I was twenty and it was found again when I was pregnant with my son. About two years after his birth, I found out it was cervical cancer this time. Everything is ok now as I’ve had a hysterectomy.
Now, ovarian cysts are fairly common. She probably put you on birth control as sometimes this is the treatment of choice for cysts especially at your age. Did they symptoms seem to subside during the time you were on BC? It is possible that the cysts have shrank down some at this time and sometimes having a baby kind of "cures" cysts. (not saying they won’t be back at a future date) Just have a heart to heart with your doctor and let her know your fears! And, congrats!
I thought that ovarian cysts usually do not get bigger or cause more trouble when you are pregnant because your hormones are like they are when you are on the pill….
You are an adult, pregnant and having medical issues. Go to your doctor, give a complete history and get help. the baby and your help have to be your first priorities…the doctor works for you!!! that is how they get paid, don’t be afraid. If they tell you something you need to hear, but don’t want to???oh well, they are probably as uncomfortable saying it to you as you are hearing it.
don’t focus on cancer. focus on getting help with getting healthy. And as a heads up, after pregnancy (full term or not) your hormones are a mess, and you need to be on top of that with your depression as well. I wish you good luck.
Ovarian cysts are usually just that, cysts, NOT cancer!
They are usually affected by hormones, and frequently treated with birth control pills.
Pregnancy also causes hormone changes, so can affect cysts.
Multiple cysts can often reduce your chance of pregnancy, although obviously not in your case.
If you are pregnant, you should be seeing a Dr anyway, to establish a health plan for your pregnancy, regular check ups, etc. Your medical history is something they will take into account.
See your Dr as soon as possible to establish what, if any, effects your pregnancy and cysts will have on each other!
you can get cancer when you are pregnant. i was diagnosed with cancer when i was 5 months pregnant.
alot of your symptoms do sound like endometriosis
also there is something called poly cystic ovarian syndrome, however the weight loss doesnt match
listen your an adult. go to your doc and say. i shouldnt have gone off the pill with out telling you but i was desperate to try to cure my depression. and in that time i got pregnant.
if your doctor says its nothing to worry about. go to a diff. doc. and keep going until someone finds out what is wrong
