Please help me.. irregular periods, ovarian cysts?
1st Question- My cycle is between 40-45 days, I have a period every month so, are my periods considered regular or irregular?
2nd Question- I had an ob/gyn doctors appointment today for the first time in my life, I am 23 and I went because I have been trying to conceive for a little over 2 years with no success. I do have one child that’s 4 but, since then have not been able to conceive. The doctor performed what seemed like a pap smear (with her fingers in my vagina while feeling and pressing down on my belly) and she said that it feels like I may have an ovarian cyst. She then scheduled me for another appointment to come back in for an ultrasound on Sept 8. She also wants me to get blood work done but, not until my period stats (2-3 days after it starts) they will be checking my prolactin levels, hormones, thyroid and a few other things I believe but, not sure what they are. I do have breast milk in my left breast but, it doesn’t just leak or come out unless I make it come out so, can that cause infertility?.. Are ovarian cysts serious and can it/they also cause infertility? I’m asking this because unfortunately she wasn’t all that thorough with me or patient, she kind of rushed through everything and didn’t want to listen to me or explain things very well. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi a regular cycle is about 30 days for most woman if your periods every month then would it not be a 30 day cycle?
I have had an ovarian cyst myself which caused my estrogen levels to be 3 times the regular limit causing me to gain 3 kgs in a few week(all in the hips and stomach area)I went for a private woman’s check-up and they discovered a cyst 5cm in size on my left ovary, anything 3cm and it may go away on its own although maybe monitored.I had a smear and my GP didn’t feel a cyst when pressing my stomach(around Feb)my periods were becoming irregular and was put down to me starting peri-menopausal (Im 43 now)When the weight continued even though I am a healthy eater and go to the gym 5x a week I knew something was wrong, then the cyst was discovered beggining of May.
I went to see my gyne straight away, you need a full bladder then scans you like when your having a baby.I had blood checks done T3and T4 to check for cancer. There are different types of cysts mine was a dermoid cyst,I was given a drug to start my period then when my period started I went back to see if the cyst had gone which it hadn’t.The gyne said I had what they call a proper cyst and would need removing with key-hole surgery, whilst waiting to see a gyne in a public hospital(we live in Hong Kong)I had another period and when I was scanned both internally and on the stomach he said he couldn’t see the cyst and that it had gone. That was last week and Im seeing my gyne on Friday for a second confirmation because the public gyne wasn’t very helpful. My weight went down 2kg 2 more to go so hopefully everythings settling down again.I didnt have milk leaking, you need to make a list of things you want to ask and express your concerns.
a fiend had a dermoid cyst which she had removed then went on to have her boy, hope things work out for you.Sarah
No actual experience with this myself, but my family has a history of ovarian cysts. My sister who is now 24, has a son who is 7 and a daughter who just turned 1 and tried for YEARS in between to have kids and couldnt because of them. I dont know if it actually causes infertility, as she did have another child but I know it makes it difficult. Both of her children were unplanned and resulted in a lapse in birth control routine (which can increase the likelihood of getting pregnant in any woman). My mom had them also and eventually ended of having to get a hysterectomy. I dont mean to freak you out, but I think its definitely good that you went to see a doctor! My sister has no current problems relating to the cysts and as far as we know is perfectly healthy! Hope everything turns out well! Good luck!
