please help, ovarian cyst rupture, hormones, seizure?
first let me say i have been to the ER, and my own obgyn. i have an apt with my gp next week.
please take the time to read my story and give me any advice or opinion you can.
i greatly appreciate it.
this weekend i was running errands and started to cramp. my period just ended a few days prior to this so i was sure this was not af cramps.
in a matter of minutes the pain grew so severe i had to sit in the passenger’s side of my car. i ended up passing out from the pain and while i was out i had a small seizure or convulsions. i was failing my arms and legs, foaming at the mouth and tears were pouring down my face. my b/f who was with me, rushed me to the ER.
origianlly the pain was on my right side but after a couple hours started to spread to my whole lower abdomen.
i was given morphine for the pain but it didnt help at all so they gave me even more.
roughly 3 hours from the begining of this pain it started to spread all the way up to my ribs. like being shot in the stomach or a severe charlie horse in my whole abdomen.
i got 2 sonograms, internal and belly, and a pelvic exam. at the ER they dismissed me after 8-9 hours as ovulation pain. this was not ovulation pain. something def burst. all the ER told me was that i had a lot of follicules on my ovaries.
the next day i was very very sore in my lower abdomen. and my ab was also distended.
i went to my obgyn who had the reports from the ER and said i had a cyst on my rt ovary.
she also said my urine test showed bactiria in it. so she gave me another pelvic exam and took some samples to test for PID. i havent gotten the results from there yet.
today i have a strange smelling discharge that is kinda yellowish. i’m sure i have some kind of infection, not sure if it was due to a cyst rupturing or what tho.
has anyone had anything like this? im so scared of it happening again.
my obgyn said it could have been a ruptured cyst or that the follicules on my ovaries are popping. why would i have so many follicules if i havent ovulated yet? (i chart monthly with bbt)
sorry for rambling im just very nervous and at a loss of what to do next.
i’m 28 y/o, and in pretty good health, not overweight, eat good etc. i have reg periods.
am i getting cysts because of hormones?
also, my obgyn recommended birth control but right now im refusing. ive been on it before and had bad exp. i’d much rather use natural treatment. i dont like the idea of possibly having too much or too little of a hormone and treating that with some mix of hormones to try to get it in line.
please, anyone?
thanks so much for your reply. i do have another cyst but it is pretty small. only 1.1 cm or something like that.
i’ve been reading about herbs for female reproductive protecting/balancing. also, last time i had a cyst i used a mixture of raw beets and molasses as a tonic and drank it once every morning. that seemed to help, i only wish i had kept it up to see if it really truly worked.
also, ive had headaches since this happened. like migraine behind my eyes and forehead.
as far as the seizure goes i have passed a few times before so that isnt too surprising, i mostly mentioned it to so the severity of the pain i was in.
thanks again!

You might be having two unrelated conditions. Ovarian cysts and Pelvic Inflammatory disease(PID) The PID is what should concern you. you will have to get that treated after the lab results confirm what microorganism is causing it, with antibiotics to prevent scarring and infertility later on. Ovarian cysts are quite common and usualy benign, unless they grow very large and rupture as in your case.Ovarian cysts are caused by hyperstimulation of the ovaries by gonadotrophic hormones. As recommended by your OB/GYN you might need to go on a short course of oral contraceptives to reduce the release of gonadotrophin hormones from you pituitary, which are hyperstimulating your ovaries and causing the cyst formation. The female hypothalomo-pituitary-ovarian axis is quite complex and can be easily distrupted by a number of factors. Some natural treatments might work in your case or in time after you have children things might settle down to normal.
I can’t answer all of your questions, but I can tell you my experience with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), a few of which have burst.
When an ovarian cyst bursts, it is absorbed into the abdomen VERY quickly; so quickly that they usually cannot get an ultrasound (sonogram) in time to view the rupture. It can be very painful, and the symptoms are usually similar to a kidney stone, so I am not sure about the seizures, passing out b/c of the pain, etc. I have never heard of this happening in relation to ovarian cysts.
When a cyst bursts, there is a fairly large risk of infection, which is why you should always see your gyn asap, and I’m glad you have an appointment. Your gyn will prescribe you antibiotics if she suspects it is infected, but I have never had one become infected, so I cannot guide you further on this.
Your gyn should look at the sonograms and decide whether or not you have any more cysts and whether or not they are big enough to remove surgically. That being said, this problem can be solved so easily with birth control. I know you said you’ve had a bad experience, but it really is the easiest and most effective thing to do. My gyn changed my birth control, and I have never had a problem since. I experience sharp pangs in my lower abdomen from time to time when I am horseback riding or dirtbiking, but it goes away quickly. I have also never had a "bad" experience with birth control, so it was easier for me.
I hope this helped a little bit. If you are still against birth control, you can always talk to your gyn about "natural" estrogen therapy, although you may not want to do it once you research into it more ("natural" estrogen replacement is made from horse urine).
Good luck, and feel free to contact me if you have more questions.
I have had ruptured cysts twice over the last 6 months and both times I had stomach cramps and lower back cramps. While it was uncomfortable it didn’t put me in the hospital so I would think that if it was a ruptured cyst you experienced that it would have to be a really large cyst to cause that kind of pain. Both times I went to my GYN and was given an internal ultrasound where they could see free-floating fluid, you don’t mention them saying that you had any so I don’t believe it was a ruptured cyst. However, my gyn told me that we get cysts every month but sometimes one will stick around and grow so it is possible that you may have done something (like heavy lifting) to make it rupture. The only way to know for sure is to get more tests done. It is possible that it is from the follicles bursting but I don’t have much knowledge on that so I don’t want to say that’s what it is.
I would go back to your GYN and have them do more tests and check for infections too, the discharge you are describing sounds like a bacterial infection. Good luck and feel better.
