When I went in the hospital for removal of an ovarian cyst, my APPENDIX was removed, ISNT CONSENT REQUIRED?

I was stunned! I am of the opinion that EVERY organ has a purpose, and why remove a HEALTHY ORGAN? Is there any recourse I can take?

Well first of all it seems that the first person who responded to you is the one that needs to grow up for acting immature on how they responded to you. Anyways it doesn’t matter if your appendix has a purpose or not if you didn’t consent and wasn’t discussed as part of your procedure they should have never removed it. Did they mention to you why they removed it? In the medical field you need consent for everything even the littlest thing. Hope this helps.
AFAIK nobody actually needs the appendix. You can live without it
but AFAIK consent is required if the doc sees something while your abdomen is open, specially if its an emergency. Thats why in my country it is required that a relative able to give consent be in the patient’s room while surgery is going on. Of course laws differ in different countries.
have a heart to heart talk with your doctor. Keep your lawyer as a last resort

If there was nothing wrong with your appendix to begin with, however, there would have been no reason for the doctor to remove it. And you might call the doc on it. Save your lawyer as a last result, but you should really sit down with your doc and have a nice long in depth chat about why he decided to remove your appendix without your consent. Yes, you can file a claim against him, but most doctors wouldnt put themselves in such a vunerable position that would allow them to be legally screwed, unless they had a damn good reason for it.
If there was an emergency while you were on the table, and your appendix burst or something similar, its the doctors obligation to save your life, even if you didnt give consent. I would want him/her too, wouldnt you?
I would sue! There was no reason for them to take it out. Totally uncalled for I dont care whether you can live without it or not! SUE SUE SUE!
well if i were you i would be happy. i tired to have them take mine when i had gall bladder surgery and they wouldn’t and i still have mine. its useless and you really don’t need it but can be life threatening if it goes wrong. so really you are lucky they took it and i wouldn’t mess with them.
Well, at least you won’t get appendicitis. =/
